Happy Holidays Poker Players

Hello everyone, its been awhile. Things are moving along nicely over here at PokerOso. As of this writing we have a combination of 347 current comprehensive poker room listings and in depth unbiased poker room reviews. My personal goal is to have that number at 1000 in the next six months which is totally doable.

We have been doing a lot of work on poker rooms here in our home state of California. We are adding California poker room listings at the rate of about 40 a month and actually in the next few weeks we should have every California poker room listed in our directory. That in itself might not have the WOW factor as written but remember we aren’t just listing names and addresses but all the relevant information we can get our hands on. We have actually engaged a small team of folks to physically call every poker room in our directory to hand verify all the information. I couldn’t be more excited about the verification process as the major thing lacking in most directories of all varieties on the internet is reliable information. That will not be the case here at PokerOso.

I’ve posted these before but I’ll do it again. You can contact us at:

Thanks for reading and happy holidays to everyone out there.

The PokerOso Community and more......

There is a bunch to report as a lot of work has been going on just under the surface at PokerOso. So much so that I have been putting off posting because my nose has been to the grind stone with work and so many things have been changing on the site. The biggest and best change is the addition of the official PokerOso Community. If you have an existing account with PokerOso and haven’t checked in for sometime I recommend you do so. If you don’t have an account ( Sign Up ) for one and become a member of our community. Some of the features include but aren’t limited to your own,

Customizable Profile
Facebook Integration
Activity Streams
Wall Posts
Photo Gallery
Video Feed
Group Creation
Event Calendar
Private Messaging
And more……..

In addition to the newly created PokerOso Community we have made some minor changes to the site to make it a little more intuitive and user friendly. You will notice that we have added a new horizontal menu at the top of each page with brand new menu items including,

Featured Poker Rooms
Highest Rated Poker Room
Live Poker Directory ( with a full sized searchable map)
Most Reviewed Poker Room
Latest Poker Room Reviews

Again I have been hard at work making all these changes and it’s my hope that they significantly increase not only the traffic flow of PokerOso but also the general usability of the site. The most important aspect of PokerOso isn’t ad revenue, the number of unique visitors, the number of page impressions etc. The most important aspect is PokerOso’s overall usefulness to the poker community at large. My hope is that PokerOso is a tool that you can use as a poker player or an aspiring poker player that will make your life that much easier. After all our poker directory is upwards of 300 current comprehensive listings. I’m not talking about just names and addresses but actual listings with real information. We should be looking at about double that in the next 6 months.

As alway check us out on Twitter and Facebook.

That’s all for now.

Cheers,

Luke Thomas

New Montana Live Poker Listings

It’s been a while since I have post as I have been in Bali, Indonesia for the past 30 days lapping up the sun. Check out some of the pictures at http://seventycats.blogspot.com/ If you ever get a chance to go, GO!

Okay that being said some good things are brewing at the Poker Directory. We have roughly 60 new listings in the last 30 days and that number will be growing by leaps and bounds over the next few months. Live Poker is definitely in the house.

We have about (50) new live poker listings from the state of Montana we are currently working on. There are more card room in Montana than you can shake your fist at and information is scarce on a lot of these rooms as they are in remote areas but we are digging and re-digging for current comprehensive information. If you or someone you know plays poker regularly in Montana let us know and have them right a review of their favorite room and have them share some of there local knowledge with the Pokeroso user base.

The new PokerOso t-shirts are going to be coming in soon. We will be creating a page on the site to showcase said shirts most of which will be given away to listing managers, live poker room folks and PokerOso poker room reviews.

Las Vegas & Florida Poker Room Listings

I wanted to drop a quick blog post to let everyone know that we now have over 50 current comprehensive Las Vegas Poker Room Listings. If you want to know about Vegas Poker you’ve come to the right spot. We are also working on our Reno listings which should be completed in the next week or two. If you frequent any of these rooms consider writing a room review. Not only are you helping us out but you are educating the poker community on your experience which is absolutely invaluable.

In addition to Las Vegas we really have a great cross section of rooms in the state of Florida which just raised it’s betting limits. Look for Florida to become another poker Mecca just like L.A. We have over 30 current comprehensive Florida Poker Rooms Listings from all the premier poker rooms in Florida.

Fun facts:

PokerOso.com has been visited by poker players in 45 countries including places like China, Iceland, Iran and Sri Lanka for example. We have also been visited by all of the Canadian Provinces and strangely not by the States of Hawaii, Wyoming, Vermont and West Virginia. We’re are not sure what’s up with them.

As of 8/12/2010 we have 153 current comprehensive poker room listings which feature things like contact information, user reviews and You Tube videos. Check out The Aria Las Vegas listing for a great example of one of our poker room listings. At the rate we are going we should have right around 500 current comprehensive listings by the new year.

July PokerOso update

I don’t know about you but I love statistics, facts and figures. Here are a few for the Pokeroso Poker Directory.

1.) We received visits to the site from 45 U.S. States, all the Canadian Provinces and 40 countries.
2.) PokerOso went live on May 31st 2010 and has received 1015 unique visitors.
3.) As of 7/5/2010 we have 83 poker room listings.
4.) I think that’s all I have. I wish I had 10 more.

On a really good note PokerOso has broken through in a key Google search term for our website, “Poker Room Directory.” Google Webmaster says we are number 5 in the ranking which is a drop in the bucket but a nice start as S.E.O. has proven to be no easy task. I can’t disclose but I am currently working on a couple of other search terms. I give you a clue, they have to do with poker, use your imagination.

Some things I am working on include adding video to PokerOso as well as adding a bunch of non U.S. online poker rooms. I am also working on incentivising (sp) reviews. I’m not sure what we are going to do but maybe something with PokerOso t-shirts or poker chips. Stay tunes for that.

new poker listings ... technical stuff ... randomness

I’m probably going to be all over the place so as not to go down that route I’m going to be numbering the PokerOso happenings. Here goes.

1.) We successfully implemented SEF (search engine friendly) url’s but am in the process of removing the underscores. In the last blog post I used the example of the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. The new url’s look like this

http://pokeroso.com/brick_and_mortar_poker/trump_taj_mahal/

I’m please with the way these are coming out but I would like to rid the url’s of the underscores.

2.) My work space is currently a mound of papers but I am working on getting things organized which never seems to happen because something new always comes about and is in the way of organization. Today we got a new listing from the Pepper Mill in Reno Nevada and they brought to light a listing field procedure that really was more technical than it should have been. Thanks to them they will have probably saved a bunch of listers a lot of grief. In the spirit of one helping another I’m telling everyone to play the Pepper Mill in Reno. You can view their listing here

http://pokeroso.com/brick_and_mortar_poker/peppermill_resort_%26_casino/

So I’m using the listing field as one very small example but the little things tend to build. With a little luck and some hard work I expect to have almost all the kinks worked out on the to do list by this coming Friday.

3.) It was either today or yesterday but we got our first user generated poker room listing outside the United States and I’m really proud of that. Check the Great Blue Heron Casino out at
http://pokeroso.com/brick_and_mortar_poker/great_blue_heron_casino/

The goal is to have 500 listings in the next 6 months with a good share coming from outside the continental United States. Poker is a world game and we haven’t forgotten that.

4.) We are still working hard on search engine optimization but it definitely can be an uphill battle at times. We would 100% appreciate anyone out there adding a PokerOso link on their site. Also think about joining us on Facebook or our Twitter accounts.

5.) We are in the process now of forming a business entity in the State of California but man do they disincentives starting said entity here. I’m only a couple of hours into my research but it’s beyond me why a small business would chose to incorporate in California. I guess when I know more I’ll have more to say on this subject.

6.) Finally if anyone out there has any questions of comments about the website we would love to hear it. Any feedback in the form of how we could make the site better would be much appreciated.

SEO, SEF, my lawyer, PokerOso Poker Room Directory view change

Okay, so the new focus right now is SEO which is search engine optimization. I’m currently working on making the url’s search engine friendly. By that I mean not a lot of gobbly gook but url’s that look like they were written by human beings. An example of a current url would be

http://pokeroso.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=95:trump-taj-mahal&catid=42:poker-rooms

Not so pretty right. In the future the url will look something like

h ttp://pokeroso.com/trump-taj-mahal

or something close to that.

Also meeting with a lawyer on Tuesday to shore up some of the Corp. issues and arrange for a new business bank account.

Should be a productive week

Oh, and also looking to switch up how the poker room reviews are actually viewed on the site which is a pretty big thing. As in my initial proposal I may add a map of the United States to the home page of PokerOso with all the casino markers as opposed to the poker room button I have now. Really not sure though so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

SSL and more to come.....

I wanted to drop a quick post and let everyone know that we added a 128bit SSL certificate to http://pokeroso.com/ That translates into increased protection for your information and the piece of mind that we value our users and want you to have the best experience possible on PokerOso.com

In the near future look for a bunch of new card room listings as we hope to get kicked into high gear in the next few weeks. We are hoping for at least a 100 current comprehensive card room listing by the end of the month and at least a handful of new reviews. Thanks to those of you who have contributed so far.

design proposal

This was my initial design proposal for PokerOso which I have followed almost to a tee up until this point and don’t intend to deviate from. I wanted to post the proposal to give people a better idea of exactly what I have going and why I think the site will be a benefit to those who play live poker.

Purpose: The purpose of PokerOso.com is to provide a comprehensive directory of live legal brick and mortar poker rooms throughout the United States and Canada.

Concept: When looking for a poker room to play whether it be in San Diego county where I am based or while traveling from home I have found it very difficult to come up with reliable, comprehensive information on poker rooms. Things like games spread (what games are played), rake ( the % of the pot the house takes), driving directions, parking availability, tournaments offered, contact information, etc. This list goes on at infinitum.

I’m not under the false assumption that this information does not exist on the internet, it does. The problem is that the information is scattered all over the web and I have had to wade through forums, blinking banner adds, blogs and the like to get bits and pieces of the information. Why not have all the information all in one location in an easy to navigate site full of current comprehensive content that can be referenced time and time again.

PokerOso.com content will be and will remain current and comprehensive by utilizing user generated content. The lions share of the card room reviews and card room content will be submitted by the user. Who wants to read a biased canned review of a card room written by the ownership when you can bypass the propaganda and go right to the source, the players who have played in these establishments night in and night out.

I like to use the example of Amazon.com. I would consider myself a casual customer but there isn’t a purchase over $50 that I make that I don’t first consult Amazon’s user reviews. Often times you will not only find a review of a product that someone has just purchased but also that same product reviewed by someone who has already owned it for a year or two. Some of the more popular items have literally hundreds of reviews so that as a potential buyer of the product I can have a really good idea of not just how it will look and feel when I get it but how it will perform the entire life of the product.

Okay, now imagine that you are going on a business trip with some associates to Southern California. You are going for three nights and four days and you are on a pretty tight schedule. You have heard there are a lot of places in So. California to play poker and you would love to get two or three hours of play in on this trip just to say you did it. With only a few hours to spare you don’t have much room for error. On pokeroso.com you’ll be able to see pictures of the card room, get mapped directions, hours of operation, games spread, parking availability, bonus info, etc. You will also be able to read those crucial reviews ensuring a positive experience and time well spent.

Content: PokerOso.com will featuring a combination of content provided by myself and to a much larger degree user generated content similar to that of Wikipedia.com. The content on the pages will be malleable in the sense that there will be just enough structure so that the users have a true sense that they are adding relevant content that will truly help like minded people with the same interests, B&M poker. For the most part users will not select from scripted A,B,C, options. There will be plenty of places for users to tell it how they see it, in their own words and in categories we have pre designated as well as categories that they themselves can create.

Users will create an account, creating a user name, password and entering some personal information such as a confirmable email address. Users will be able to opt in or out of email contact by PokerOso.com. At that point users will be able to publish room reviews and rate specific aspects of the rooms. Each addition will be manually reviewed by PokerOso.com staff before going live. Users will not be required to log in or create an account to surf the site. An account is only necessary to add content.

Users will have the ability to add content in categories such as games spread, parking, staff friendliness, tournaments offered, contact information, security, bonuses, operation hours, web addresses, rake, smoking policies, etc. The categories will be featured on each page as well as a user option to write a critique or simply rate the card room with a 5 star review on the room itself and the sub-categories similar to that of the product reviews on Amazon.com. Users will not be limited to written content alone as pictures and video will be welcomed as well. Coupled with the aforementioned content users will have the ability to map directions to and from their desired card room.

There should be no reason why a user would view a card room on the PokerOso.com and not have a really good idea of what that card room is like, from what kind of clientele the room attracts, to the cleanliness of the bathrooms.

Secondary Content:
A.) Link/feed to official PokerOso blog as well as the official PokerOso Facebook.
B.) Twitter updates from users and prominent display of current PokerOso tweets as well as direct links to PokerOso Twitter page
C.) Ability for users to use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. to relay any and all information form PokerOso.com
D.) Advertisements, most likely the unobtrusive use of Google Adwords/Adsense.
E.) A comprehensive listing of internet poker sites including bonuses, reviews and links.
F.) A user generated poker terms page with definitions.
G.) Generic links page
H.) Contact Page
I.) A page dedicated for users to upload poker related pictures and video.
J.) Links to poker related articles.

All of the aforementioned secondary content is just that, secondary content. It should be unobtrusive and truly secondary to the B&M poker room listings.

Look and Feel: I’d like the site to be rich with content but sparse, almost minimalist in contrast with similar sites. Ease of use and an uncluttered look are very important. There will be a search bar on the home page where the user will be able to search card rooms by name, state, city and zip code. I also foresee an advanced search function where the user could search by such categories as legal age to play, the card room’s smoking policy, whether the room offers alcohol, the distance from and address or zip code etc.

While I would obviously like advertisements it’s very important that they be completely unobtrusive and secondary to content displayed on any given page. One of the most important aspects of the site is that it’s abundantly clear what the sites purpose is from the home page on. So many sites have so much clutter and so many options that it’s not clear what the sites purpose is. I want this sites look and feel to point in one direction and one direction only, to provide a truly comprehensive directory of live legal brick and mortar poker rooms throughout the United States and Canada. While there will be other content, that content will be secondary to the poker room listings.
